SCMTA Pre-College Auditions
The South Carolina Music Teachers Association holds auditions for students of teachers of piano, voice, guitar, brass, woodwinds, strings, percussion and organ in order to encourage the many young students throughout the state, and to give support to the excellent private teachers of South Carolina. Performance and musicianship requirements of audition participation can supply goals against which both teachers and students can measure their progress. The purpose of the audition is to encourage each student to work to his/her fullest capacity.
Auditions are held in each of the ten districts in early spring. Students who receive an “Outstanding” rating are eligible to perform in the State Auditions held in Columbia at the end of April. An Honors Recital featuring selected students from each division is held a few weeks following the auditions.
The Music Teachers National Association sponsors student competitions in both composition and performance. These competitions are intended to encourage students and to recognize the work of their teachers. The MTNA Student Composition Competition is open to students from elementary through college levels. The MTNA Junior (ages 11-14), Senior (ages 15-18), Young Artist (ages 19-26), and Chamber Music (average age 18-26) Performance Competions include all instruments and voice.
Competitions begin at the state level. SCMTA sponsors all levels and categories of the MTNA Competitions. Auditions are held in conjunction with the State Conference during the month of November. State winners advance to the MTNA Southern Division Competitions in January. The Division winners compete in the National Finals held at the MTNA National Conference in March.
