Dr. Julia Harlow
Dr. Julia Harlow has been Director of Music and Organist at Second Presbyterian Church since 1997. She has also been adjunct faculty at the College of Charleston since 1998 where she has taught harpsichord and organ lessons, as well as Eartraining, Keyboard Harmony, Music History and Women Composers Survey. Julia’s degrees are in Organ and Harpsichord Performance – undergrad from University ofIowa and Masters and Doctoral degrees from the University of Oregon in Eugene. She has frequently performed with the Charleston Symphony, Chamber Music Charleston, Spartina Consort and in the L’Organo and Early Music Series of Piccolo Spoleto. She has researched and performed music of women composers of the 17th and 18th c. since 1995.
On October 14th she will speak about and perform works of several female composers of the 18th -19th centuries and perform pieces on harpsichord and organ. It is hoped that several pianists (of all ages) will play music by women of the 18th – 21st centuries as well. The composers represent a variety of socio/economic levels, ages, nationalities and life circumstances. Some of the composers covered: Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Elisabetta Gambarini, Augustinian Nuns of Vitré (18th c), Princess Anna Amalia of Prussia, Anna Bon, Marianne von Martinez, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Clara Schumann, Elfrida Andrée, as well as speaking on composers whose piano works participants perform.
