Michael Flynn
Michael Flynn is an Americana-adjacent singer/songwriter based in western NC. His songs have been featured in movies, on shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Shameless, and in commercials globally for companies like Microsoft and Kia. He’s also won various awards for songwriting, most recently the 2021 Newsong Music Grand Prize. After earning an English degree from College of Charleston and a few years studying songwriting at Berklee College of Music, Michael signed a record deal with SonyBMG in 2006. He began releasing music as Slow Runner in a collaboration with producer/multi-instrumentalist Josh Kaler and other musical friends. Slow Runner has spawned 5 full length albums among other EPs and singles, and have toured internationally with acts like The Avett Brothers, Josh Ritter, Built to Spill, William Fitzsimmons, and many others. Besides the Slow Runner records, Michael has released three solo albums and some singles, most recently the unvarnished ‘endlings’ EP in 2022. He’s been called ‘a pioneering solo artist’ by American Songwriter, with ‘songs as catchy as they are clever’ (Relix Magazine).
Songwriting in Your Teaching Studio | 10:30am-12pm
In this session, Michael will coach teachers on how they can approach songwriting within their teaching studios. He will cover the elements of a song and the tools used to capture it. He will also review the SCMTA Songwriting Competition submission guidelines and adjudication rubric.

Songwriting Student Masterclass* | 1pm-3:30pm
In this session, Michael will work directly with students to hone a song (submitted prior to masterclass or brought to the floor if time permits). He will also perform several of his own songs and discuss his creative process.
